View Full Version : malakayn or malikayn
as salaam alaikum
I was reading a part of Muhammad asads tafsir.. and in refernce to surah baqarah aya 102 he said
"As regards the designation of Harut and Marut, most of the readings of the Qur'an give the spelling malakayn (the two angels) but it is authentically recorded (see Tabari, Zamakhshari, baghawi, Razi etc) that the great companion of the Prophet, Ibn abbas as well as several learned men of the next generation e.g., al Hasan al basri, Abu l Aswad and Ad Dahhak read it as malikayn (the two kings). "
which is the most correct reading? two angels or two kings? where there two kings of this time period who would have been known as Harut and Marut.. is there any meaning in the names themselves to connect them?

- Never do I argue with a man with a desire to hear him say what is wrong, or to expose him and win victory over him. Whenever I face an opponent in debate I silently pray - O Lord, help him so that truth may flow from his heart and on his tongue, and so that if truth is on my side, he may follow me; and if truth be on his side, I may follow him.

First: I find it odd that you would bring such a question under this heading. From what I understand this is a folder in which we are free to ask a question about quran and hadith and get an answer from a sheikh. and you bring this here?
Second: i invited you to email me in the past and ask me any question you wanted to know about me instead of waisting your time trying to figure me out.. yet you ask me here
Third: your comment of taqiyya shows me that no matter what I say to you, you will reject that which does not agree with your suspsions.
Fourth: your failure in the past few days and from this post to great me as one muslim greats another when you address a post to me shows me that you have come to your own conclusions as to what I am
Fifth: I have warned you sister to make sure your suspisions are correct for they may harm your soul. For Allah says in most cases suspision is a sin.
Sixth: while you may feel that your in a position to question my status as a Muslim and my degree of Iman I will not grant you such a status.

Assalaamu alaikum.
Nzingha...I realize quite well that mainly because you brought this question to this particular forum, you are looking for a more qualified response from br. Munir. Although he has not yet responded to you, I am still hoping that he will shed some more knowledgeable light on this.
However, I have searched this quite thoroughly in books of tafseer...mainly that by Ibn Katheer, among others. What I have found is this:
Although some of the companions did read it as 'malikayn'...the majority of consensus of scholars is that it is to be read 'malakayn'. In those renditions where the companions understood it to be 'malikayn'...the two kings in question are Suleiman (Solomon) and Dawood (David). It makes rather sense, even in this reading...for the whole event of this verse is in relation to the issue of magic...and how it spread to be knowledge among the inhabitants of the earth...jinn and men. When Suleiman had his scribes writing for him his books of that which was revealed to him, some mischeivious jinns began writing in between the lines of the scriptures that the scribes wrote...and this writing which the jinns were writing is the knowledge of magic. After Suleiman's death...one of these jinns who were responsible for that writing told some of the jews that this book of knowledge was buried under Suleiman's throne, knowledge which Suleiman did not wish to share with his people. The reasong that Suleiman had it buried...was that when he realized that the jinn had superimposed this writing between the lines of the scriptures, he ordered it to be buried under his throne, in hopes that it would remain there, and not come into the hands of jinns and men who would use it to attempt to harm others, and cause much problems and fitnah. However, the jews had it dug up, and upon learning that which was contained in it, they claimed that it was the book of Suleiman, and that Suleiman was a sorcerer, not a prophet...because his book contained this knowledge and information...and he had buried it to keep it for himself. That rumor which was started and spread by the jews against Suleiman, was the reason for the revelation of this verse. This verse of the Quran (2:102), in that respect, clears Suleiman, telling us that it was not Suleiman who sinned, but the Satans...
The other rendition, that the reading is 'malakayn' is in reference to the two angels (and this rendition is more widely accepted as the truest) Harut and Marut...they were the ones who were assigned to contain the knowledge of magic. The were sent with this knowledge as a mere test for mankind and jinn...and they were not allowed to transmit any of that knowledge without also giving them the remainder of the verse, which is the warning...that this is merely a test, so do not blaspheme (fa la takfur) (or...do not sin).
I have not given you exact quotes...if you need, I shall. But...what I have given you here is the main gist of what I have read on this. The last explanation is the most widely accepted in most circles of scholars. And, it really seems the most comprehensible.
Om Mohammed
Assalamu alaikum:
The Holy Qur'an gives the Tafsir of some verses, for example when we read the verse 102 of the second chapter, it says that it was in the Kingdom of Solomon, therefore the Harut and Marut were angels, and the Qur'an says MALAKAIN, means two angels.
