Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem
All praises are due to Allah. And peace and blessings be upon our nabee Muhammad s.a.w
Below is an extremeky important reminder for myself and my brothers and sisters in Islaam.
THE HARVEST OF THE TOUNGES
Allah s.w.t has favoured us with our tounges and the ability to express ourselves to others, he did not leave us like the animals of the earth, dumb and incapable of expressing our thoughts with words. How gratefull are we to Allaah for
such a generous and amazing gift? Many of us use our tounges in ways which anger Allah and think of nothing of it , and in doing so we actually display shocking ungratefullness to our Lord and sustainer without whom we could not use any of
our faculties whether talking or otherwise, more than this, without whose will we would not even exist!
One of the reasons that our hearts become sick is due to us poisoning them with unnecessary talk, bereft of the mention or remembrance of Allah.
Being mindful of what comes out of our mouths is a critical issue for the believer. What we say to others everyday to their face, or over the phone.,or on internet chatrooms will
all be accounted for.
On the authority of Muaadh ibn Jabal who reported that the Messenger of Allah s.a.w took hold of his tongue and said: ‘ Restrain this’, Muaadh said : ‘O Prophet of Allah are we accountable for what we say’? He s.a.w exclaimed: ‘May your
mother be bereft of your loss. Is there anything more than the harvest of the tongues which throws people on their faces into the fire?’
(Part of a longer hadeeth collected by at Tirmidhee who said Hasan/Saheeh)
So it is clear that indeed what we say and talk about is not something insignificant in the sight of Allah. On the contrary our tongues are most significant In determining Our final and eternal destination.
On the authority of Abu Hurairah, the messenger of Allah s.a.w said, “The servant speaks words, the consequences of which he does not realise, and for which he is sent down into the depths of the fire further than the distance between the east and the west.” (Agreed upon)
The same hadith was collected by at Tirmidhee , with a slight variation :
“The servant says something that he thinks is harmless, and for which he will be plunged into the depths of the fire as far as seventy autumns.” (Graded Hasan).
Subhanallah! Will we not fear Allah and be careful in what we utter? Don’t we see through these aahadeeth the grave and evil consequences of improper use of the tongue? Unfortunately, many of us nowadays have filled our daily
conversations with improper and unnecessary talk, lying, backbiting, gossip, cussing, dissing or whatever term one chooses to describe the general foulness emitted from our mouths into ears of others or onto computer screens of others still. How insignificant do we consider our evil speech, and some of us may not even see what is so objectionable about it! Yet all these blameworthy words we have uttered may have taken us into the depths of an everburning fire, far ,far awayfrom the tranquility of Jannah which every believer strives hard to attain.
The reasons why we talk evil may be many: Anger, Ignorance, bad company e.t.c. However the prophet s.a.w gave us excellent advice,to shield us from the harmfulness of our tongues, when he said:
“Let whoever believes in Allah and the last day either speak good or keep silent.” (Agreed upon)
So Indeed silence is a virtue. If we exerted ourselves in good speech in the form of giving dawah, reciting Quraan and the authentic dhikr and duaa then what time would we have in speaking evil?
Indeed our salaf as saleh, the sahabah knew well the importance and gravity of this issue. This is due to the fact that they knew better than any of us the intent and true nature behind the warnings contained in similar aahaadeeth. This was due to the fact that these revelations came down to the prophet s.a.w whilst they lived amongst him and of a surety they were most strict and fearful in acting on them and accounting themselves in their light. Perhaps some examples will benefit and impact upon the dear reader:
It is reported that umar once visited Abu Bakr and found him pulling his tongue with his fingers. Umar said, ‘Stop! May Allah forgive you’. Abu Bakr replied: ‘This tongue has brought me too dangerous places.’
(This narration is Hasan according to Abu Ya’laa, Baihaqee, and as suyootee)
How many of us are as concerned as Abu Bakr as siddeeq as to the consequence of our tongues? Shouldn’t we be more concerned than Abu Bakr considering that he was promised paradise while we have no such promise made to us. Should this not cause us to reflect and make tawbah?
It is said that Abdullah ibn Masood said : “ By Allah, besides whom no God exists, nothing deserves a long prison sentence more than my tongue.”
Also ….. Abu Hurairah reported that Ibn Abbass said: A person will not feel greater fury or anger for any part of his body on the day of judgement more than what he will feel for his tongue.”
Let us remember that what comes out of our mouthsis only a reflection as to the level of our Islaam and the state of our hearts!
I finish by making duaa too Allah that whoever reads this short reminder is affected by the narration’s contained in it as I was and that Allah s.w.t helps us all in controlling our tongues.Ameen!
On the authority of Sahl ibn Sa’d, the prophet s.a.w said, “Whoever can guarantee what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him the garden.”
(Bukhaari)
