Assalaamu alaikum ya muslimeen.

Received the following article in the email, and thought it beneficial to post for all here, inshaAllah.

Lulua.

====================

Assalam alaikum,

In the Arabic language, Shaytan is derived from Shatana which means 'the far
thing'. Hence Shaytan (Satan/Iblis/Devil/ etc) has a different nature to
that of mankind, and his sinful ways are far away from every type of
righteousness. [It was also said that Shaytan is derived from Shata
(burned), because shaytan was created from fire. It is important to note
that Shaytan was one of the Jinn which went astray, all Jinn are made from a
smokeless flame, a type of fire].

For this reason, those who are rebellious amongst the Jinn and mankind are
referred to as 'Shaytan', Allah the Almighty says:

"And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shaytan (devils) among
mankind and jinn, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion
(or by way of deception" [Surah al Anam (6): 2]

In addition, the Musnad of Imam Ahmad records that Abu Dharr said that the
Prophet Muhammad said: 'O Abu Dharr! Seek refuge with Allah from the devils
of mankind and the jinns'. Abu Dharr asked him, 'Are there human devils?'.
He replied, 'Yes'. [Musnad, 5: 178]

Furthermore, it is recorded in Sahih Muslim that Abu Dharr said that the
Prophet said: 'The woman, the donkey and the black dog interrupt the prayer
(if they pass in front of those who do not pray behind a sutra (barrier)'.
Abu Dharr asked, 'What is the difference between the black dog and the red
or yellow dog?'. He said, 'The black dog is a devil'. [Muslim, 1: 365]

NOTE FROM ME:

While the above hadith is recorded in the Sahih of Imam Muslim (d. 261 AH),
the hadith scholar al-Jurjani (d. 365 AH), one of the famous scholars of his
time, wrote in his 10 volume work "al-kamil fi duafa al-Rijal" "( The
Complete (work, guide..etc) on weak men (not worthy of transmitting
hadith)", that the hadiths about women and dogs invalidating prayers are NOT
reliable.

In addition: al-Shafi, al-Thawri, Abu Hanifah, and Malik b. Anas did NOT
accept the hadiths above about invalidating prayers. And they ALL stated
that NOTHING could pass in front of a person and invalidate his or her
prayers. Some scholars argued that the hadiths were weak, others said they
were fabricated, and some say they were authentic, but later abrogated by the
Prophet. [Ref: al-Khandlawi, Awjaz al-Masalik, 3:156-159; al-Sayuti, Sharh
Sunan al Nasai, 2:62-66; al-Mubarakfuri, Tuhfat al-Alwadhi, 2:256-261; Ibn
Hajar, Fath al-Bari, 1:698-703; al-Nawawi, Sharh Sahih Muslim, 3/4:450-454;
