Assalaam u alaykum
These days millions of tourists and holidaymakers head out to the Mediterranean to enjoy the sun each year.
Little do they know of the historical background ... little do we know ... here's a brief insight into the Muslim legacy of the beautiful islands.

Prior to the rise of Islam, the Mediterranean was under Byzantine occupation. When the
Muslims rose to power these islands came to be occupied by the Muslims. The
occupation of these islands was, however, short-lived and when the Muslim
power declined the Muslims lost their hold on these islands.

The island was the seat of the Minoan civilisations during the period
3500-1100 BC. It was occupied by the Romans in 66 BC. The island was
captured by the Muslims in 649 AD under the rule of Caliph Muawiyah. The
Byzanties were expelled by the Muslims from Carthage in 698 AD and they
occupied Crete. The Muslims captured the island in 823 AD. It remained in
the posession of the Muslims until 960 AD when it was recovered by the
Byzantines.

The island was raided by Muslims in 654 AD. It was occupied by the Muslims
under the rule of Caliph Muawiyah in 672 AD. The Muslims lost it to the
Byzantines soon afterwards. It was reconquered by the Muslims in 717 AD. And
in the 9th cetury AD the Muslims were expelled from the island.
