Subject: Sanctions on Israel
ISRAEL: SANCTIONS, DIVESTMENT, BOYCOTT!
WHAT FUTURE FOR PALESTINE?
MAJOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN LONDON
Logan Hall, Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1
Saturday 30th November 2002 10.30 a.m.-5.pm.
Responding to calls from Palestinian NGOs, outraged British public opinion and
dissidents inside Israel, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign has organised a
major conference in London calling for an international boycott of Israel,
including divestment, sanctions and an arms embargo alongside the economic and
cultural boycott. Betty Hunter, General Secretary of PSC, said: "For too
long, the Palestinian plea for international help has been ignored. If
governments will not act to end Israeli occupation and apartheid, concerned
people and organisations comprising civil society must. Britain has a historical
and moral responsibility toward the Palestinians, for example, in terms of the
Geneva Convention. The boycott is a non-violent way to place pressure on Israel
to comply with international human rights law and for the international
community to express our call for justice for the Palestinian people, who have
endured over half a century of forced exile, oppression and occupation. "
Opening the conference and KEYNOTE SPEAKER will be South African Government
Minister and former head of military intelligence of the ANC armed wing, Ronnie
Kasrils.
Among other speakers are:
Dr Ilan Pappe, distinguished Israeli academic;
Dr Nancy Murray, (USA);
Professor Steven Rose (who, along with Professor Hilary Rose, initiated the UK
academic boycott);
Shaher Sae'd (General Secretary, Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions;
Victoria Brittain (journalist),
Anas Al Tikrity (Muslim Association of Britain);
Dr Ghada Karmi (author of an important new book "In Search of Fatima");
Veronica Dunn (UNISON past president);
Jeremy Corbyn MP;
Dr Mustafa Barghouti, head of Health, Development, Information and Policy
Institute, Ramallah, has been invited. We are anxiously awaiting news as to
whether he will be given permission to travel by the Israeli occupiers.
THE PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN will advise of further significant
developments as the preparations for the conference take shape over the coming
weeks.
To arrange interviews on the day or leading up to the conference please contact
