Dr Ahmad Javed Khawaja Monday said that his family was providing shelter only to a Punjabi woman who happens to be the wife of an Arab, Abu Yasir.

The 65-year-old philanthropist doctor arrested for his alleged links with al-Qaeda told the judge of an Anti-Terrorism Court during the proceedings that he had relations with Abu Yasir since the early days of Afghan war against the USSR.

"I have no links with any man with the name of Sh Abdul Aziz, however, I have heard such a name in Afghanistan two decades ago," Dr Khawaja said. He further said that he had been interrogated by the FBI personnel. The suspect doctor said that American agents thoroughly interrogated him at an unidentified place and were satisfied that "I have no connections with the terror network."

He said now police had implicated them in illegal arms case which was not in accordance with law as he had license of all weapons. Talking about the incident, he said that he was sleeping at his residence when he heard screams of his watchman.

"We thought some outlaws had trespassed, therefore, we loaded our arms and rushed outside," he said adding that after 10 minutes, screams of watchman were stopped which scared them and they observed people in bushes outside his house. "My son asked me to turn on light, however, I sent him to police station to get help which is on 10-minute distance from his house.

We took position near a wall in order to face any situation for self-defence," he said adding that he was fully convinced that they were dacoits. Though they were in uniforms and announced that they were cops, the way of their operation scared them, created doubts in their minds about their real identity, therefore, they loaded their weapons for self-defence.

He said they managed to enter their house and introduced themselves as policemen upon which we did not open fire on them, however, we were convinced that these were terrorists clad in uniforms. "They maltreated us and asked us to sit near a wall. They strengthened our belief when they handcuffed us and turned their guns towards us," he maintained.

He said they took his brother's son from another room and tied the hands of all members and produced them before FBI personnel. "They started talk accusing us of having connection with al-Qaeda. They inquired about the ladies and children and pressurised us to admit that we obtained money from al-Qaeda," he contended.

"Thank God, nobody was injured during this operation, otherwise, they would have repented over it," he added. He said neither he nor any member of his family had any connection with al-Qaeda.

"We gave shelter to Yasir's wife on humanitarian grounds and we have sympathies for women and children," he said. He submitted though FBI personnel treated roughly but the local authorities treated well and gave them respect. On their request, the court also directed the police not to cover their faces again.

Punjab PML-N MNAs and MPAs, including Parliamentary leader Rana Sanaullah Khan, Kh Sa'ad Rafiq and others, will stage a protest at 2.30pm today (Tuesday) outside Punjab Assembly to condemn the arrested of Dr Kh Javed Ahmed and others.
