And God also said in Surat Fatir "Verily Satan is an enemy to you so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents that they may become companions of the blazing fire."
Satan has seven steps to make us as he wishes. The peek is the first step, if it failed he jumps to the second one and so on.
THE FIRST STEP:
He starts by saying to you don't believe in God. Don't believe in His religion. Don't believe in Judgment Day. If you followed him from this step you will settle his fire and will relieve him.
The Second Step:
After he failed to turn you to an unbeliever, he will try to make you associate others with Allah. For example to give the superiority to the fashion or to a person whom you love rather than Allah and the duties he ordered us to fulfill.
And the solution is to fulfill all the duties and the five prayers of the day and to be submitted to our prophet's (peace be upon him) behaviors (Sunnah). As fulfilling the duties God ordered us is a proof that seeking pleasure of God is more important to you than anything else. And the submission to the Sunnah is a proof that you obey Allah according to our prophet not to your personal mood. If this trap failed too, here is the third trap.
The Third Step:
He will then whisper to you to commit capital sin (al-kaba'er) such as neglecting the prayers, disobeying one's parents, fornication, drinking alcoholic drinks or drugs. And you may get secure from this trap by avoiding every person who may encourage you to do so, also avoiding the bad places. And if you committed one of these capital sins you should feel sorry and regret it and turn to God promising Allah that you will never do that again, and God always accept our repentance (tawba) .
The Fourth Step:
Satan's fourth step is a sort of camouflage. He tells you that as you have given up the capital sins then your situation is better than thousands of other youth. And there is no harm if you committed some minor sins. God is merciful and oft forgiving. And while you are committing the minor sins as if they are not a big deal those who had committed the capital sins felt regret and turned to God in repentance and they are in a better situation. Because they turned to God while insisting on committing a minor sin may turn it into a capital one. And the solution is continually seeking forgiveness of God and doing a lot of righteous deeds.
The Fifth Step:
As Satan discovered that you are not on of those who may be trapped by sins, he decided to try another trick. His fifth step to your heart is to waste your time. To occupy your time with the unprohibited deeds that you do not think that they are wrong instead of the righteous deeds which may gather score.
You may avoid this trap by knowing the value of hours and minute. Till now Satan still has the hope to keep you away from the straight path. If he failed in the previous five steps, he still has got two weapons left.
The Sixth Step
His sixth step is to make you concerned with the issues of less importance in Islam rather than those of greater importance. Our prophet (peace be upon him) said that: "Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches. Excellent of which is the declaration that there is no God but Allah. And the humblest of which is the removal of what is injurious from the path." So you may find yourself deeply concerned with the removal of what is injurious from the path and you took this issue as the case of your life and neglected the more essential. You may avoid this trap by well knowing the priorities in Islam. And evaluating the issues you may face, what is more important, urgent, and essential than that. His last weapon to get control of you is the seventh step.
The Seventh Step:
And this trap is the most critical one because his companions among people are helping him. You will find people mocking at you and making fun of you because of being religious.
The defense of this weapon is to be proud of your Islam, as God has told us in Surat Al-A'araf "A book revealed unto thee, so let thy heart be oppressed no more by any difficulty on that account."
Now you must ask yourself at which stage you were surrendered to Satan. If your answer was for example at the third or fourth stage then you have been easily defeated. However, if your answer was at the fifth or sixth stage then you are not an easy enemy, and you have strong faith.
