Story: Humour of Hasan al Basri, knight or ass
Assalam alaikum,
It was said that a man came to al-Hasan al-Basri (the famous companion) and found there another man to whom a child was born. He said to him, 'Congratulations for the knight you have got!'
Then al-Hasan said to the speaker, 'How could you know whetherthe child will be a knight (i.e. noble/honourable) or just an ass (donkey i.e. lazy/dishonourable etc)?'
The man interjected asking, 'What then do you say I should say?'
Al-Hasan said, 'Say: May the bestowed be blessed, and you be grateful to the Bestower (i.e.Allah). May the child attain wisdom, and you be provided with his dutifulness'.
[Ref: Daleel al-Saliheenp 77]
May Allah have mercy and guide us all, ameen.
