One thing we probably all share in common, among other things, is that if we are asked who we love the most, we will all answer, "Allah". Saying this will be easy for most, without causing any hesitation. However, what is the depth of our understanding behind this statement?

When we say we love our parents, we follow it through with obedience to them, having concern for them and trying to treat them well. When we say we love our friends, we express it by keeping in contact with them, making an effort to spend time with them and being there for them when theyneed us. When we say we love our job, we show it by trying our best to keep it. We
listen to bosses' orders, get to work on time and try and excel ahead. This type of love seems easy enough to understand. What is difficult to understand then, is why so many of us upon occasion choose our family, friends or work over Allah, when it is Him that we say that we love the most. Maybe we need to look to the sincerity behind our statement.

We say we love Allah the most, but why when it comes to the few minutes of prayer we have to dedicate to Him each day do we let our minds wander into menial thoughts? We say we love Allah the most, but why do many of us choose continually sinning (i.e. not make haste to repent for our sins, but keep on sinning knowing of our actions) over our love and obedience to Allah, the most Great?

When it comes to loving others or being loved, we keep a high standard. How many parents would think their children loved them if they disobeyed them day and night? How many friends would think you love them, if you continue to neglect and ignore them? We should strive to have the most respect and greatest love for Allah. This love as in the love we express for others can be manifest through the heart, tongue (words) and limb(actions).

Our love and gratitude to Allah should not only come from our heart, but also be expressed through remembering Him (i.e.
reciting Qur'aan and making dhikr the way the Prophet (S) taught us to) and by being obedient to Him. One who is sincere about his love for Allah, would naturally try his best to please Him.

So what does it truly mean when we say we love Allah the most?

Allah tells usin the Qur'aan what is translated to mean:

Say (O Muhammad (S) to mankind): «If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Quran and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.» ...... (Al-Imran 3:31)
