Right now we are in an examination hall. We are taking a test. Every action we do is either recorded for us, or against us. Every smile, every kind word is recorded and marked in our favor. Every lie, every missed prayer and fast is recorded against us. We are writing our own books we are the authors.
Do we ever wonder how much our book weighs? Or do we think we have plenty of time to fill it up? The problem with that, is at any moment our pens can and will be lifted and it will be said to us no more writing- no more Salat, no more Charity, no more Fasting, no more kind words - that's it time is up! Please hand in your paper now! All of us have experienced sitting an exam and running out of time. How did we feel? Full of regrets. Because we knew that if we had more time we could have done better. You see right now we have time. We still have our pens.
Verses: Let's see what Allah (SWT) tells us about our record of personal deeds. Allah's promise is the truth, and whose word can be truer than Allah's? (4:122)
Our deeds both big and small are being recorded:
Woe to us! What sort of Book is this that leaves neither a small thing nor a big thing, but has recorded it with numbers!" And they will find all that they did, placed before them, and your Lord treats no one with injustice. (18:49)
All that they do is noted in (their) Books (of Deeds). Every matter, small and great, is on record. (54:52-53)
From these verses we can see that we will be surprised that nothing was left out. This tells us that we should not take any action of ours lightly as we are being recorded every second.
Allah (SWT) Is Witnessing everything:
And you are not (engaged) in any affair, nor do you recite concerning it any portion of the Quran, nor do you do any work but We are witnesses over you when you enter into it, and there does not lie concealed from your Lord the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven, nor any thing less than that nor greater, but it is in a clear book. (10:61)
Each of us is responsible for our own Deeds:
And We have fastened every man's deeds to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a book which he will find wide open. It will be said to him: "Read your book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day.". (17:13-14)
Allah (SWT) tells us how to make the most of our time:
By Time. Verily! Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith and do righteous deeds and (join together) in the mutual enjoining of the Truth and of Patience and constancy. (103-Al-Asr).
From this we learn that having Faith is not enough, along with Faith we need righteous deeds and patience. We should also be firm and constant in them.
~ Summary
Prophet Muhammad said : Allah the Lord of Honor and Glory says, "Whoever does one good deed shall receive ten rewards or even more. Whoever sins once shall be punished in it proportion, or I may pardon him." (Muslim)
From this hadith we can see that Allah (SWT) is so Just and Merciful. No injustice will be done on the day of Judgment. The only injustice done will be the injustice we did to ourselves: Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were dust!" (78:40). That's how devastated man will be with himself, because that day he will realize he can blame no one but himself.
Imagine the day when our books will be placed before us. That day we will be alone with our deeds. And every soul shall be paid back fully what it has done, and He knows best what they do. (39:07). Don't make it a day of regrets. Make it a day of celebrating. As long as we still have our pens right now the choice is ours!
