George Ben Bachi, a 36-year old Israeli citizen was recently released from al
Ghraib, after spending four months in the jail, which gained notoriety
following exposures of routine humiliation and mistreatment of prisoners by US
forces.
Ben Bachi, a Moroccan born Jew was apprehended near the Iraqi-Jordanian
border, with several Moslem associates with whom he had illegally entered the
country. At the time of their arrest they were with Barazan Tikhriti, Saddam
Husseins infamous half brother.
Iraqi Human Rights Minister Bahtiar Amin said that Ben Bachi had been
released after it had become clear there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on his
part.
>From the documentation he carried it seems that he has been living in Europe
over the past several years, primarily the UK and Germany.
Israeli government sources say US authorities never informed them they had an
Israeli national in custody. The Interior Ministry refused to either confirm
or deny that Ben Bachi was an Israeli citizen, citing privacy issues,
fueling suspicions that US forces had unwittingly arrested a Mossad agent who had
been operating undercover, possibly providing them with valuable human
inteligence.
Another interesting twist is the fact that he was released last week, the
same day a senior Iraqi official was in Israel atttending the annual ICI
Counter-terrorism conference.
