Assalaamu alaikum ya muslimeen.

Greetings and good day to all.

It was a real tragedy, what happened to New Orleans. And the tragedy is only getting worse, with the pitiful 'relief' efforts going on. The delay of help, etc.

Anyways...something that I found truly obnoxious and ignorant in the whole affair...was the directive by officials predicting the course of the hurricane...for the residents to evacuate.

That in and of itself was not bad...in fact, it was a reasonable and logical measure to take.

However, the more local officials should have taken a better look at it, and had more insight of preparation.

For who were they directing this directive towards? The most dirt-poor persons of the region.

People who barely had enough money for the homes they lived in. No means of transportation. No extra money to pay for any transport out of town, nor to pay for lodging even if they did evacuate.

I mean...if they were to take up and leave...then where were they to go? Out on the highway down the road a bit??

Surely, these folks who don't have enough for their daily bread-literally-could not pay for a motel room or a flight escaping to sunny florida or elsewhere.

It was terribly non-existent and poor planning that led to the complication of the whole situation.

There should have existed some sort of plan for a mass exodus of those who could not afford it, as well as providing some sort of mass accomodation for those exiting the area. Even if only a couple of school yards at the very least. As well as providing for food and water while there.

These ppl are truly dirt poor. And yet they expect them to be able to take up and leave when commanded to??

SubhanAllah. Get real, folks.

Oh..sorry...forgot that this is addressed to the Bush administration. They have no reality except for their own back pockets and bank accounts.

Take a load of this quote:

9) "I mean, you have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving." –Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), Sept. 6, 2005 http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/currentevents/a/katrinaquotes.htm

Not having a Plan is a Plan, sis.

Assalaamu alaikum.

perhaps, yes, indeed.

And perhaps the ppl are beginning to realize that...or at least something...hence the outrage from the public (at the very least those who were most closely affected) at the lack of such a plan, and the lack of apparent care when what happened did happen.
