Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

President Musharraf made the landmark address in New York
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said his country will take steps to build ties with Israel as the Middle East peace process progresses.
He made the comments at a ground breaking dinner meeting with members of the American Jewish Congress.

He is the first leader of a Muslim nation that has no diplomatic ties with Israel to hold a public dialogue with Jewish leaders.

Israel and Pakistan recently held talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

I am convinced that peace in Palestine will revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism

President Musharraf

Pakistan and Israel: Friends now?

President Musharraf's historic address in New York began with bread being broken and prayers from the Koran being recited.

He was given a standing ovation as he arrived for the meeting at which he called for the establishment of a Palestinian state to end violence in the Middle East and bring security to Israel.

"Israel must come to terms with geopolitical realities and allow justice to prevail for the Palestinians," he said.

"I am convinced that peace in Palestine that does justice to both the Israelis and the Palestinians will bring to a close the sad chapter in the history of the Middle East [and] will revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism."

He also criticised Islamic societies for failing to embrace modernity.

"Many of us remain wrapped in a time warp, still struggling to reconstruct our political, social and economic systems to respond to the challenges of our times," he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Secret talks

The meeting comes three days after President Musharraf shook hands with Israel's prime minister at the United Nations.

Both countries are said to have held two years of secret talks which culminated in a meeting of their two foreign ministers in Turkey, two weeks ago.

After the talks Pakistan's foreign minister said that his country had decided to "engage" with Israel after Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.

But the talks were criticised by hardline Islamic groups in Pakistan.

Pakistan has never recognised the state of Israel, but its neighbour India opened diplomatic ties with the Jewish state in 1992.

Once a traitor always a traitor! Musharraf is a shame to the noble Islamic army of Pakistan. The noble soldiers of Islam ought to get rid of him.

President sold us cheaply

The fact that the Washington Post would report the president’s alleged remarks about rape vicitms; that the prime minister of Canada, our supposed ally in Bush’s war on terrorism, would blast Musharraf even whilst acknowledging that Musharraf had distanced himself from these remarks and that the Western press has blown this all up as an international incident, shows how much the West really respects President Musharraf.

Although President Musharraf has not sold his body for visas or dollars, he has shown that selling our interests for Western pats on the head is an equally dishonourable venture. Indeed, has Musharraf not done enough to earn the West’s respect? Was it not enough that he sold our security to provide America airbases on our soil so they could destroy Afghanistan and so we could suffer US$10 billion losses to our economy? Or that he sold our soldiers, by sending them to the tribal areas to protect America from Afghan resistance? Or that he is selling the Muslims of Kashmir so that the West’s ally, India, could rise as a regional power. Or that he selling the Muslims of Palestine so the West’s other ally, the Zionist state of Israel, can do the same.

Actually, you can never earn respect from anybody, if you seek to sell yourself to please others. The only time the West has ever respected us was when we sought to please none other than Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), held hope in none other than Him and asked from none other than Him. In the time that Islam was implemented through the Caliphate, the Western princes and princesses came to us for education, the Western kings were in awe of our technology, the Western crusaders were in awe of our military and the Western oppressed came to us for refuge.

A stark contrast to selling ourselves to the West in accordance with Musharraf’s Enlightened Moderation.

DR ABDUL WAJID,

Lahore.
