Mr. President, you should be working with all Palestinian groups to prevent the Palestinian holocaust in the making.
His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas
President of Palestine
Dear Mr. President
We are shocked to learn that the Palestinian Authority opposed a draft Security Council statement to express concern over the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The statement was drafted by Qatar and backed by Indonesia.
The reason given by your UN envoy for opposing the statement was that he was not consulted. This is unacceptable and highly immoral given the fact that 1.5 million Palestinians are suffering from hunger, and dying because of shortage of medicine and drugs due to the blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel, the United States and the European Union.
Anyone with any human feeling would have welcomed the initiative taken by Qatar and Indonesia to highlight the crisis so that the international community would take steps to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians.
Gaza is facing a humanitarian disaster and genocide. Israeli strangulation is leading to the collapse of its economy. Even the pro-U.S. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has urged Israel to open all border crossing points into Gaza. He said: “If what is left of Gaza’s economy is allowed to collapse, poverty levels already affecting two-thirds of households will rise further, and the people of Gaza will become near totally aid dependent.”
Last week, Hardad-Zervos of the World Bank warned: “The pillars of Gaza’s economy have weakened over the years. Now, with a sustained closure on this current scale, they would be at risk of virtually irreversible collapse. A solution must be reached very soon, if not immediately… ” He said that 3,190 businesses were closed in the last month alone, leaving more than 65,000 people unemployed. Unemployment could reach the unprecedented level of 44 percent.
The collective punishment of the people of Gaza by Israel is reminiscent of the Nazi treatment of the Jews during the Second World War. Professor Richard Falk, a Jew and a leading expert on international law, does not think that it is “an irresponsible overstatement to associate the treatment of Palestinians with the criminalised Nazi record of collective atrocity.“
In an article for the Turkish newspaper ZAMAN, Falk wrote: “The entire population of Gaza is treated as the ‘enemy’ of Israel and little pretext is made in Tel Aviv of acknowledging the innocence of this long victimised society. To persist with such an approach under present circumstances is indeed genocidal, and risks destroying an entire Palestinian community that is an integral part of an ethnic whole. It is this prospect that makes appropriate the warning of a Palestinian holocaust in the making, and should remind the world of the famous post-Nazi pledge ‘never again.’
Mr. President, you should be working with all Palestinian groups, including Hamas, to prevent the Palestinian holocaust in the making and not obstruct the efforts taken by others to help end the blockade.
The Fatah-Hamas conflict, unless resolved quickly, can be very damaging to the Palestinian cause. We believe that it can be resolved peacefully through dialogue, without any pre-conditions and outside interference.
Jamil Mizher, a leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has suggested forming a committee to probe the entire events that started with infighting, reaching the Gaza takeover by Hamas and the ensuing edicts passed by you. He has also called for the restructuring of the PA security apparatuses on a professional basis and free from factionalism in order to fight Zionist aggression.
We appeal to you to accept PFLP’s suggestion and initiate a dialogue with Hamas to resolve your differences and face the enemy as a united force.
Kind regards.
Yours truly,
