Question: A questioner from Ohio asks: What is the ruling concerning videos, video cameras, and picture-taking if it is to benefit the Da’wah?
Answer: If what this meant by the video camera is that camera which takes or captures those pictures and actions which are moving, what is also called the live pictures and not still pictures called photographs and if it something specifically concerning the propagation of Da'wah such as capturing a class so that it may be captured and taken to another place and shown at another time and the people may benefit, then this is an affair that there is no problem with. Rather, it is from dealing or contributing and acting together in that which is righteous and from taqwaa and spreading good amongst the people. We see the People of Knowledge of this era and from the scholars, the `Ulamaa' as-Sunnah and Ahlus-Sunnah leaving these inventions/gizmos that are doing these actions of taking the pictures and they don't try to take them away. They also answer the questions of the people who are asking them and the answer may be conveyed to them right in front of them - they see the Shaykh answering their question. These are from the issues that there are no problems with it. It is from the inventions/gizmos - the things that will help the people of goodness propagate that good such as the internet, the audio cassettes, the fax and other than it from the inventions that are able to propagate the Da'wah in various forms. They are all things and inventions which we can use to propagate Da'wah. For example the internet - it is used, and there you may find Islaamic information such as classes. So we want the class, and we are able to get it through the internet. The internet, or the tape, is a machine - an `aalah (آلة) - an invention (instrument) that we can use to get to the class that we are seeking to hear and listen to; and also the fax and likewise the letters within it which reaches somewhere else. These are certain inventions that are permissible and it is good to go ahead and benefit from them in order to propagate the Da'wah.
