MAB welcomes the defeat of the 90-day

Internment Bill in Commons Vote

The Muslim Association of Britain welcomes the Parliament vote on the Anti-Terrorism Bill's 90-day internment, which saw the defeat of the government's proposal.

The result which came as a shock not only because of the defeat suffered by the government's bill, but also because of the margin by which it was defeated; by 31 votes, despite the sudden and surprising summoning back of Cabinet members Jack Straw and Gordon Brown from official trips to Russia and Israel respectively in time for the vote.

The Muslim Association of Britain remains steadfast in that even the 28-day internment proposal which ultimately won the vote, is unjustified, and MAB will continue to campaign with its sister organizations and friends against the entire anti-terror bill which the government proposed in the aftermath of the 7/7 attacks in London.

Anas Altikriti, spokesperson for MAB said immediately after the result was declared: "This is not only a victory for the campaign, but a victory for the concept that change is possible and far more fruitful through positive engagement in the political process. The lobbying campaign had a tremendous effect on the outcome, and our point of view and argument carried considerable weight in the debates that took place in the Commons throughout the day."

MAB regrets that only Sadiq Khan MP out of all the four Muslim Members voted against the government, which will come as a great disappointment and shock to the Muslim community as a whole, and especially the constituents of Shahid Malik, Mohammed Sarwar and Khalid Mahmoud.

However, we wishes to congratulate all those who worked tirelessly to attain this outcome, including the Mayor of London's office, Liberty, Stop The War Coalition, CND, NAAR and many others, and to express its gratitude to all the Members of Parliament from all political parties who voted against the bill.

Show support and solidarity

to Sadiq Khan MP

The Muslim Association of Britain has learnt that the Muslim MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan, has come under pressure after voting against the government’s 90-day detention bill on Wednesday.

Being the only Muslim MP to reflect the stand of not only British Muslims, but also the majority of the British people who saw this proposed bill as a contravention of basic human rights and freedoms and an erosion of our civil liberties, Sadiq Khan must receive our praise, admiration and support.

The Muslim Association of Britain therefore is calling today on all Muslim organisations as well as all Muslims and non-Muslims in Britain who opposed this bill to write to Mr. Khan’s office expressing their support for his brave, principled and non-partisan stand on this crucial issue.

Anas Altikriti, speaking for MAB stated yesterday: “It is a serious measure of our democracy when party whips are allowed to exert immense pressure, twist arms and all but bribe elected members in order to conform with party stands rather than be allowed to consider what is right and what is wrong.”

MAB also calls for prayers to be said for those who were courageous and took a principled stands and for strength and resolve to be given to their hearts.

Dear friend,

Assalam O Alaikum & Hello

I am writing this short e-mail to all of you (Muslim and non Muslim) who have sent supportive emails to me for the stance I took to try and get improvements to the Terrorism Bill and, in particular, the vote on Wednesday.

I have been inundated with kind words and I am very grateful.

The motivation for my stance has never been to “gain popularity.” On important issues such as this, it is a matter of conscience – I could not have voted in favour of a measure to detain people without charge for 90 days. I worked with other Labour MPs to put forward amendments to the Bill, but in the end, a consensus over the issue was not reached.

It is very pleasing and reassuring to know that my position on this has so much support, especially as it was not an easy thing for me to do.

Thank you once again for taking the time to send your e-mail.

Best wishes & Salaam,

Sadiq
